Skills Work for Wayne

Wayne Turkington is celebrating after winning the prestigious Skills for Work Award at the Northern Ireland learndirect Achievement Award Ceremony.

Wayne from Lurgan won learndirects Individual Skills for Work Award, which recognises learners who have undertaken learndirect learning in order to progress at work.

In order to progress at work, Wayne wanted to improve his computer skills and with the support of his employer, NACCO Materials Handling Group INC, Wayne has recently achieved a European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL) and BCS Level 2 qualifications at Southern Regional College’s Learning Shop in Portadown.

Wayne chose learndirect as he felt self-paced personalised learning would be more suitable for him than a traditional classroom setting, particularly as he is dyslexic. This form of learning suited Wayne, who was able to work on modules at his own pace, study flexibly around his work patterns and take the examinations at convenient times. Both Wayne and his employer are now benefiting from his new skills and confidence.

BBC Northern Ireland Presenter, Donna Traynor hosted the Northern Ireland learndirect Achievement Award Ceremony and says, “It was a humbling experience to hear the stories of individuals who have over come personal difficulties in order to improve their future. Wayne’s story is very inspiring and I’m a great advocate in continuously improving yourself through education. I wish Wayne the best of luck in the future”.
