Learning centre gets royal visit

Adult learners at a centre in Greenwich enjoyed meeting the Princess Royal last week when she popped along to hear how gaining qualifications can change lives.

Since 2004, the Greenwich Community Learning Champions Project has been helping people gain basic skills that will enable them to get better jobs. It is supported by the National Institute of Adult Continuing Education (Niace).

Angela Wilden is one of the people benefiting from the project. She left school with no qualifications and suffers from dyslexia. Thanks to the project, she took an adult literacy course and can now read with her children who also have learning difficulties. She said, "What I have gained the most from being a Community Learning Champion is the pleasure of being able to motivate others into learning and volunteering."

Angela went on to explain how important it is, as a parent, to set an example to children about the importance of getting an education. She said, “I feel that I have helped others to spread the word about adult learning and volunteering and how it can help with family life."

The Princess Royal was visiting the adult learners to mark the launch of the Community Learning Champions Support Programme, which is expected to raise the profile of these types of adult learning facilities. This project, along with many provided at learndirect centres all over the country give adults the chance to get qualified and learn at home. There are options to suit everyone, so why not improve your chances of getting a job with one of our courses?
