Funding made available to help people affected by redundancy

Thursday 04 July 2010
A new funding scheme is going ahead in Bootle, Merseyside, which will see thousands of people being paid to take up basic skills training.

The Job Ready project is being funded by the Skills Funding Agency and will target people who have either been made redundant or are facing redundancy.

Anyone who agrees to take 75 hours or more of learning, including adult literacy and adult numeracy classes, will be paid as much as £1,000.

The funding is extremely welcome in the region as unemployment there now affects some 56,000 people. The training received by the participants will be tailored to their needs.

Peter Johnson, who works for an agency that provides training and learning guidance, said, ”This is a fantastic opportunity for the people of Merseyside and this free training will help large numbers of people move into a new career and a new start after redundancy.”

Being made redundant, especially when there is little work around, can be extremely stressful. It is a good idea, however, to use the opportunity to brush up on basic skills to make sure you can compete with the other people applying for jobs in your area.
