Adult learners nominated for awards

Three people taking adult learning courses in South Shields have been nominated for awards.

Suhel Ahmed Sikder, Johir Haque and Mohammed Haque are all enrolled on an IT course and are in the running at the Bangla Achievement Awards, the Shields Gazette reports.

The event is in its second year and aims to recognise people who have overcome challenges in order to improve their skills and achieve high marks.

Mohammed Haque, 34, told the news source he was "delighted" to be in the running.

"I enjoy the course and helping others if they are ever struggling," explained the father of two, who also works at an Indian restaurant in the town.

Johir Haque said he plans to use what he has learnt to become a graphic designer.

"The course has given me a chance to learn new skills which I hope to put to good use," he stated.

And Mr Ahmed Sikder, who is 37 years old and has three children, said he has "loved every minute of the course".

He was recently involved in a car crash but has still managed to continue his studies and added that he "never expected" to be put forward for an accolade.

The trio will find out if they have been successful at next Tuesday's ceremony, which is being held at the town's Westovian Theatre.

In November of last year, an adult learner who works in the care industry won two awards for his good work in the sector.

According to the Dudley News, Tommy Silvester is currently taking management and leadership courses in order to improve his skills further.
