Former NVQ students set up businesses

A former NVQ student launched her own venture in Caversham on November 16th 2009.

Perry Johnson has been working on building up a client base after attaining NVQ qualifications in 2004. She completed NVQ courses in beauty therapy at levels two and three before starting work.

Since then, she has saved up enough money to purchase her own salon, which opened earlier this month, reports the Reading Chronicle.

The former adult learner said she was "overwhelmed" by the response she received from her clients and the local community.

"I look forward to offering high-quality beauty services," she commented.

Among the treatments and therapies on offer at Perry's Beauty are waxing, facials, eyelash extensions and semi-permanent make-up.

Ms Johnson is not the only NVQ student to have gone into business.

Francesca Craig, 23, runs Revitalize Hair and Beauty Spa in Horwich with her sister, who is 26 years old. She started off her career getting work experience with Toni & Guy in Bolton then obtaining her NVQ levels one and two in hairdressing.

At 17 she was one of the youngest people in the country to achieve this and since then she has set up her own salon in a former theatrical make-up shop.

"It's been tough setting up at the start of the credit crunch, but it means that whatever comes next will be better," she told the Bolton News.

Ms Craig is currently in the last three in the NatWest Everywoman Awards 2009, which recognise the success of some of the UK's most inspiring female business owners.
