Business secretary says he wishes increase the commitment of staff and productivity.

The quality of work carried about by staff in the UK is to be the focus of a new government review.

Business secretary John Hutton announced at a Labour Party conference fringe event that the review will focus on improving staff commitment and thereby increasing workplace productivity, Personnel Today reports.

He added that there had been too much focus on employment legislation in recent years.

"I'm not understating the importance of minimum standards, but we have spent ten years developing them. Now we need to take forward how we improve the quality of work," he told the news source.

The review of employee engagement will be conducted by Nita Clark, the director of workplace consultation body the Involvement and Participation Association, and non-executive director of the Ministry of Justice David MacLeod.

Earlier this week, Rosanna Downes of the Fawcett Society claimed that jobs which are traditionally associated with women "are undervalued".
